10th Infantry Division (Wehrmacht)

The 10th Infantry Division was a German infantry division active during World War II. It was formed in October 1934 in Regensburg as one of the first divisions of the Wehrmacht's rearmament program. Initially codenamed "Cover Command Regensburg" ( Kommandantur Regensburg), it was renamed 10th Infantry Division in October 1935 when Germany officially announced its rearmament.

The division participated in the invasion of Poland in 1939 as part of Army Group South. It then took part in the Battle of France in 1940, operating in the Ardennes and advancing towards the English Channel.

In 1941, the 10th Infantry Division was involved in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union, as part of Army Group North. It fought in the Baltic region, participating in the sieges of Leningrad and other engagements on the Eastern Front.

Suffering heavy losses during the winter of 1941/42, the division remained on the Eastern Front, engaged in defensive battles and localized offensives. In late 1942, the division was re-equipped and remained in the northern sector of the Eastern Front.

The division was eventually destroyed in the Courland Pocket in 1945, during the final months of the war. Survivors who managed to escape capture surrendered to Soviet forces at the end of the war.

The 10th Infantry Division was considered a standard infantry division and was equipped accordingly. It underwent some reorganizations and re-designations during its existence, but its core structure remained relatively consistent. The division was involved in numerous major campaigns and battles, and experienced heavy casualties throughout the war, particularly on the Eastern Front.
