Jubal (film)

Jubal is a 1956 American Western film directed by Delmer Daves. It stars Glenn Ford, Ernest Borgnine, and Rod Steiger. The film is based on the 1903 novel Jubal Troop by Paul Wellman.

The film tells the story of Jubal Troop (Ford), a drifter found wandering in the mountains by Shep Horgan (Borgnine), a kindly rancher. Shep takes Jubal in and offers him a job. Shep is married to Mae (Valerie French), a younger, restless woman who is openly dissatisfied with her life. Mae quickly becomes infatuated with Jubal, much to the consternation of Pinky (Steiger), Shep's jealous foreman, who also desires Mae.

As Mae's advances toward Jubal become more aggressive and her rejection of Shep more blatant, Pinky sees an opportunity to manipulate the situation to his advantage. He plants seeds of doubt in Shep's mind, suggesting that Jubal and Mae are having an affair. This leads to escalating tensions and ultimately a violent confrontation.

The film explores themes of jealousy, betrayal, and the destructive power of rumor. It is notable for its strong performances and its use of the widescreen CinemaScope format. Charles Bronson also appears in a supporting role.
