Norman Hunter (writer)
Norman Hunter (1899 – 1995) was a British children's author, best known for his series of books featuring the absent-minded Professor Branestawm. He was also a stage magician, performing under the name "Nornando the Mysterious".
Hunter's Professor Branestawm books, beginning with The Incredible Adventures of Professor Branestawm in 1933, chronicle the hilarious inventions and misadventures of the eccentric professor. These books are characterized by their whimsical plots, absurd situations, and the professor's endearingly flawed genius. Branestawm's inventions are often designed with overly complex solutions to simple problems, leading to chaotic and humorous outcomes.
In addition to the Branestawm series, Hunter wrote other children's books, including The Taoist Tank, but these are less well-known. His stage magic likely influenced the imaginative and fantastical elements present in his writing.
Hunter's work has been praised for its enduring appeal to children, and the Professor Branestawm books continue to be enjoyed by readers of all ages. They are considered classics of British children's literature, and have been adapted for television and radio.
