Walter Göttsch

Walter Göttsch (1900-1984) was a German expressionist painter and graphic artist. He is primarily known for his woodcuts and paintings, often featuring urban landscapes and scenes of social commentary.

Born in Hamburg, Göttsch studied at the Landeskunstschule Hamburg under Karl Kluth and later at the Bauhaus in Weimar with Lyonel Feininger. His work reflects the influence of both expressionism and the Bauhaus aesthetic, often characterized by bold lines, geometric shapes, and a focus on depicting the harsh realities of modern life.

Göttsch's artistic output includes a significant number of woodcuts, a medium particularly well-suited to the expression of strong emotions and sharp contrasts. His subject matter often depicted the working class, urban poverty, and the political turmoil of the interwar period in Germany.

After World War II, Göttsch continued to work as an artist, although his style shifted somewhat, incorporating more abstract elements. He remained active in the Hamburg art scene until his death in 1984. His work can be found in several German museums and collections.
