William Locke (painter)
William Locke (1732 – 1810) was an English amateur artist and patron of the arts. He is primarily known for his portraits and landscapes, often executed in watercolor.
Locke was born into a wealthy family, the son of John Locke of Merton, Surrey. This financial security allowed him to pursue his artistic interests without needing to rely on it for income. He studied art under John Laporte and was a member of the Society of Arts.
Locke's artistic style is generally considered to be competent but not groundbreaking. His portraits often depict members of his family and social circle. He also produced landscapes, influenced by the picturesque movement, that depict scenes from his travels and the surrounding countryside.
Beyond his own artistic output, William Locke was a significant patron of the arts. He provided financial support and encouragement to several artists, including Thomas Hearne and John Henderson. His home at Norbury Park became a gathering place for artists and intellectuals, further solidifying his role within the artistic community of his time. His collection of drawings and prints was also considerable.
