Lake Pumacocha (Jauja)
Lake Pumacocha is a high-altitude lake located in the Jauja Province of the Junín Region in Peru. The name "Pumacocha" translates from Quechua to "Puma Lake." Situated in the Andes Mountains, it is known for its scenic beauty and relatively remote location.
The lake's water source is primarily glacial melt and rainfall. It is part of a larger watershed that contributes to the Mantaro River basin. The surrounding area is characterized by typical Andean flora and fauna, including various bird species and high-altitude vegetation.
Local communities often rely on the lake for limited irrigation and livestock grazing. Tourism to Lake Pumacocha, while not extensive, contributes to the local economy, with visitors drawn to its natural beauty and opportunities for hiking and wildlife observation. The lake is accessible via unpaved roads, making access somewhat challenging.
