Thrust (science fiction magazine)

Thrust was a science fiction fanzine, later semi-professional magazine, published by Doug Fratz in the United States. It began as a fairly typical fanzine in the 1970s, featuring articles, reviews, and letters of comment. However, Thrust gradually evolved into a more ambitious publication, including more original fiction and professional-quality artwork.

A key feature of Thrust was its focus on critical analysis of science fiction literature. Fratz often published in-depth articles and interviews with notable authors and critics, creating a forum for intellectual discussion within the science fiction community. While still retaining elements of its fanzine origins, Thrust gained a reputation for serious and thought-provoking content.

The magazine's title was sometimes styled as Thrust: Science Fiction in Review to better reflect its evolving focus. It ran for a significant number of issues and remains a notable example of a fanzine that successfully transitioned towards a more professional, albeit still niche, publication. The last issue was published in the early 1990s. Due to its small print run and niche appeal, back issues can be difficult to find.
