Apollo Records (1944)
Apollo Records was an American record label founded in 1944 in New York City. It was initially owned by Hy Brechner, Ike Brechner, Samuel Lowe, and Bess Berman. Apollo was known for its diverse roster, encompassing gospel, jazz, blues, and R&B artists.
In its early years, Apollo gained prominence for its gospel recordings, particularly those by Mahalia Jackson, who became one of the label's biggest stars. Other notable gospel artists on Apollo included the Roberta Martin Singers and the Dixie Hummingbirds.
Beyond gospel, Apollo Records also played a significant role in the development of rhythm and blues music. The label signed artists like Dinah Washington, Wynonie Harris, and the Orioles, contributing to the growing popularity of the genre. Apollo also recorded jazz musicians such as Charlie Parker, though these recordings were not as commercially successful as its gospel and R&B releases.
Bess Berman took over the label's operations in the late 1940s. Despite its successes, Apollo Records faced financial difficulties and eventually ceased operations in the early 1960s. Its catalog has been reissued by various labels over the years, ensuring that the music of Apollo Records continues to be heard.
