Robert Sinclair (locomotive engineer)

Robert Sinclair was a British locomotive engineer and railway manager during the mid-19th century. He is primarily known for his work with the Eastern Counties Railway (ECR) and its successor, the Great Eastern Railway (GER).

Sinclair served as the Locomotive Superintendent of the Eastern Counties Railway from 1845. His tenure saw a period of significant expansion and standardization of the ECR's locomotive fleet. He was responsible for designing and building a number of new locomotive classes for the ECR, adapting to the growing demands of passenger and freight traffic.

Following the amalgamation of several railways to form the Great Eastern Railway in 1862, Sinclair became the Locomotive Superintendent of the new, larger company. He continued to develop and introduce new locomotive designs tailored to the GER's specific needs, contributing significantly to the operational efficiency of the railway. He retired from his position with the GER in 1866. Sinclair's contributions were important in establishing engineering practices and standards on these early railway lines.
