Taka (paper mache)

Taka refers to the art of paper mache made in the Philippines. The term originates from the Tagalog word for paper, "taka." It is a folk art tradition primarily used to create decorative items and toys.

The process typically involves carving a wooden or clay mold of the desired shape. Several layers of paper, often newsprint or brown paper, are then pasted onto the mold using a starchy adhesive. The paper mache is allowed to dry completely. Once dried, the paper mache shell is carefully removed from the mold.

The resulting taka is then painted and often varnished for protection and durability. Traditional designs are brightly colored and feature recurring motifs, such as floral patterns, animals (particularly horses, carabaos, and roosters), and religious figures. Modern taka designs may incorporate a wider range of colors and patterns, reflecting contemporary tastes.

Taka is a significant part of Philippine cultural heritage, particularly in the towns of Paete, Laguna, and San Pablo, Laguna, where the craft has been passed down through generations. Taka figures are often sold as souvenirs and used in local festivals and celebrations.
