Krems District

The Krems District (German: Bezirk Krems) is an administrative district in Lower Austria, Austria. It is located northwest of Vienna and encompasses a varied landscape, including parts of the Wachau valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its vineyards and historical sites.

The district capital is Krems an der Donau, a city with its own separate city statute and therefore not part of the district's administration, although serving as its namesake and central hub.

The Krems District is primarily an agricultural area, with viticulture (wine-growing) playing a significant economic role. Tourism is also a major industry, capitalizing on the Wachau's scenic beauty and historical significance. The district is easily accessible via road and rail, making it a popular destination for both domestic and international visitors.

The district is further subdivided into municipalities, each with its own local government. These municipalities manage local affairs and contribute to the overall administration of the district. The Bezirkshauptmannschaft (district administration) in Krems handles regional administrative tasks and represents the interests of the state of Lower Austria at the district level.
