Thibaris
Thibaris was an ancient Roman-Berber city located in present-day Tunisia. Situated in the Medjerda River valley, it was strategically important for its agricultural land and control of trade routes.
History:
Thibaris's origins predate Roman rule, possibly as a Numidian settlement. Under Roman influence, it flourished, becoming a municipium. The city saw considerable development, including the construction of public buildings, temples, and baths. Agriculture was a major economic activity, with the surrounding plains providing fertile land for grain production. The city's importance likely diminished with the decline of the Roman Empire in North Africa.
Archaeological Remains:
The ruins of Thibaris offer insights into Roman urban planning and architecture. Excavations have revealed remnants of a forum, temples dedicated to Roman deities, and residential areas. Particularly notable is the well-preserved Roman bath complex, indicative of the city's prosperity and lifestyle. Mosaics and other artifacts recovered from the site are now housed in museums, providing evidence of the city's artistic and cultural heritage. The site offers a tangible link to Roman presence in North Africa and the interactions between Roman and Berber cultures.
