William Norman (VC)

William Norman (1832 – 26 October 1896) was a British soldier and recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.

Born in Lewes, Sussex, Norman was a Sergeant in the 7th Regiment of Foot (Royal Fusiliers) in the British Army during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC.

On 19 June 1855 at Sebastopol, Crimea, during the attack on the Redan, after repeated attacks had failed, Sergeant Norman took over command of a party and by his undaunted bravery and determination led it forward under a heavy fire. This enabled the party to hold a position which they maintained until the final repulse. He was severely wounded.

Norman was later commissioned into the 68th Regiment of Foot. He achieved the rank of Captain. He died in West Hoathly, Sussex. His Victoria Cross is held by the Royal Fusiliers Museum, London.
