Rimouski (federal electoral district)

Rimouski was a federal electoral district in Quebec, Canada, that existed from 1867 to 1968. It was located in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region, primarily centered around the city of Rimouski.

Creation and Abolition:

The riding was created with the passage of the British North America Act in 1867, and was one of the original 65 electoral districts in Quebec. It existed continuously until it was abolished in 1966 as part of a redistribution of electoral districts. The territory previously within the riding of Rimouski was then largely incorporated into the riding of Rimouski—Témiscouata.

Boundaries:

Throughout its existence, the boundaries of Rimouski electoral district generally encompassed the geographic area surrounding the city of Rimouski, extending along the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River. Minor boundary adjustments occurred over the years due to population shifts and electoral boundary revisions.

Members of Parliament:

The riding was represented in the House of Commons by a single Member of Parliament (MP). Notable MPs who represented Rimouski include:

  • Jean-Baptiste-Romuald Fiset (Liberal)
  • Auguste-Théodore Lepage (Liberal)
  • Georges-Albert Guertin (Liberal)

Electoral History:

Rimouski traditionally leaned towards the Liberal Party, but saw periods of representation by Conservative and other parties. The electoral results reflected the broader political trends in Quebec during the period.

Successor Ridings:

Following its abolishment in 1966, the area was primarily encompassed by the new electoral district of Rimouski—Témiscouata, which later underwent further boundary changes and name alterations in subsequent electoral redistributions.
