Terrapin (amphibious vehicle)
A Terrapin is a type of amphibious vehicle, specifically a tracked landing vehicle, developed and used primarily during World War II. The British military originally designed and deployed these vehicles for logistical support and amphibious assault operations.
The Terrapin was characterized by its all-terrain capabilities, being able to traverse both land and water with relative ease. Its design incorporated a boat-shaped hull for buoyancy and tracked propulsion for movement on various surfaces, including beaches and rough terrain.
Terrapins were used to transport supplies and personnel across water obstacles and onto enemy-held shores. While not heavily armored, their ability to navigate difficult terrain made them valuable assets in specific military campaigns. Later variants were developed with improved features, but the core design remained focused on amphibious transport. The Terrapin's legacy lies in its contribution to amphibious warfare and its innovative design for a vehicle capable of operating in both land and water environments.
