Joe Bugel
Joe Bugel (1940-2020) was an American football coach best known for developing the "Hogs," the dominant offensive line of the Washington Redskins in the 1980s. He is widely credited with revolutionizing offensive line play and elevating its importance within the game.
Bugel's career spanned over three decades, including stints at the college and professional levels. He served as the offensive line coach for the Redskins under head coaches Joe Gibbs and Richie Petitbon. He also held head coaching positions with the Phoenix Cardinals and the Oakland Raiders.
His "Hogs" offensive line, featuring players like Russ Grimm, Mark May, Jeff Bostic, Joe Jacoby, and George Starke, were instrumental in the Redskins' success, helping the team win three Super Bowls (XVII, XXII, and XXVI). Bugel's coaching philosophy emphasized technique, physical play, and a strong team bond. He instilled a culture of toughness and dedication that became synonymous with the Redskins' identity during that era.
Bugel's coaching tree includes many successful offensive line coaches across the NFL. He is remembered as a highly influential figure in football history and a master of offensive line play. He was inducted into the Washington Commanders Ring of Fame in 2023.
