Wang Dan (dissident)

Wang Dan (born February 26, 1969) is a prominent Chinese dissident and pro-democracy activist. He was a key student leader during the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

Following the crackdown on the protests, Wang Dan was arrested and imprisoned for his role. He was sentenced to four years in prison in 1991 on charges of counter-revolutionary propaganda and incitement. He was released on medical parole in 1993.

In 1995, Wang Dan was rearrested and sentenced to 11 years in prison for conspiring to overthrow the government. He was released on medical parole in 1998 and subsequently exiled to the United States.

Since his exile, Wang Dan has continued to advocate for human rights and democracy in China. He earned a Ph.D. in history from Harvard University and has held various academic positions. He remains a vocal critic of the Chinese government and an advocate for political reform. He has authored several books and articles on Chinese politics and history. His activism focuses on promoting civil society and political awareness among Chinese communities, both within China and abroad.
