USS Cormorant (MHC-57)
The USS Cormorant (MHC-57) is an Osprey-class coastal mine hunter of the United States Navy. She was the seventh ship of her class. The Osprey-class mine hunters were designed to clear mines from vital waterways.
MHC-57 was built by Intermarine USA in Savannah, Georgia, and commissioned on November 16, 1998. Her homeport was Ingleside, Texas, until the base's closure.
The Cormorant's hull is constructed of fiberglass, minimizing its magnetic signature and allowing it to operate safely in minefields. The ship utilizes advanced sonar and mine-neutralization systems, including remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), to detect, identify, and neutralize underwater mines.
In 2007, the USS Cormorant was decommissioned and transferred to the Naval Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Beaumont, Texas. As of 2023, she remains in reserve status.
The ship's motto is "Semper Vigilans" (Always Vigilant).
