USCGC Spencer (WPG-36)

The USCGC Spencer (WPG-36) was a 327-foot (99.7 m) Treasury-class cutter of the United States Coast Guard. Commissioned in 1937, she served primarily in anti-submarine warfare and convoy escort duties during World War II. Prior to the war, she performed law enforcement, search and rescue, and general patrol duties.

Notable during her wartime service was the Spencer's participation in the Battle of the Atlantic. On April 17, 1943, she sank the German submarine U-175 with depth charges. The engagement resulted in the capture of several surviving German crew members. Spencer was also credited with the sinking of U-225 on September 18, 1943, along with the Canadian corvette HMCS Chambly and the British destroyer HMS Gatineau.

Following World War II, Spencer continued her service with the Coast Guard until she was decommissioned in 1950. She was later scrapped. The Spencer earned several awards and accolades for her service, highlighting her significant contribution to the Allied war effort. The Spencer's record exemplifies the crucial role Coast Guard cutters played in protecting convoys and combating the U-boat threat during the war. Her wartime patrols and successes helped to ensure the safe passage of vital supplies across the Atlantic.
