Guyot (crater)

A Guyot crater is a type of lunar impact crater characterized by its relatively flat floor and low, rounded rim. These craters are named in honor of Swiss-American geologist and geographer Arnold Henry Guyot.

Guyot craters are generally considered to be old, heavily degraded craters that have been significantly modified by subsequent impacts and geological processes. The original crater morphology has been eroded and subdued over time, leading to their distinctive, gentler features.

The flat floor of a Guyot crater is often attributed to infilling by ejecta from nearby impacts or by volcanic processes that occurred long after the initial impact event. The low, rounded rim is a result of erosion and the smoothing effects of space weathering and micrometeorite bombardment.

Distinguishing a Guyot crater from other degraded craters can be challenging due to the gradual nature of crater degradation. Their subtle features require careful observation and analysis of lunar surface imagery.
