Strasbourg Agreement (1675)

The Strasbourg Agreement, signed in 1675, was a pact among several Imperial Estates of the Holy Roman Empire. It aimed to create a neutral zone in Alsace during the Franco-Dutch War (1672-1678). The agreement was intended to prevent the ravaging of the region by both French and Imperial troops. Its main goal was to limit the impact of the war on the civilian population and infrastructure of Alsace.

The agreement stipulated that the participating territories would remain neutral and not provide support to either side of the conflict. This neutrality was hoped to ensure the safety and well-being of the Alsatian population.

However, the Strasbourg Agreement proved largely ineffective. Despite its intentions, French forces, under the command of figures like Turenne, continued to operate in Alsace, and the region suffered significantly during the war. The agreement ultimately failed to prevent the widespread devastation and disruption caused by the Franco-Dutch War, highlighting the difficulty of enforcing neutrality in a region strategically vital to both France and the Holy Roman Empire. The French subsequently occupied Strasbourg in 1681, formally annexing it.
