USS Resaca (1865)

The USS Resaca was a single-turreted, twin-screw monitor built for the United States Navy during the American Civil War. Originally named Tunxis, she was renamed Resaca on June 15, 1869, honoring the Battle of Resaca in Georgia.

Designed for shallow-water operations, the Resaca was intended to patrol rivers and coastal areas. Her construction was authorized in 1862, and she was built by Alexander Swift & Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. She was launched on January 31, 1865, but was not commissioned until February 22, 1869, due to the end of the Civil War and the subsequent reduction in naval needs.

The Resaca saw limited active service. Most of her career was spent in reserve or on coastal defense duties. She was eventually sold on June 16, 1874, at Wilmington, Delaware. While her service life was short, the Resaca represents an important class of warship designed to meet the specific challenges of riverine warfare during the Civil War era. The specific details of her duties post-commissioning and prior to being sold in 1874 are somewhat limited in available historical records.
