He is best known for his success driving Corvettes, particularly for the Grady Davis-led Gulf Oil-sponsored Corvette team.

Thompson began his racing career after serving in the U.S. Army Dental Corps during World War II. He quickly gained recognition for his skill and aggressive driving style. He achieved considerable success in the SCCA (Sports Car Club of America), winning numerous national championships. His victories helped to establish the Corvette as a serious contender in sports car racing.
