National Union (Gabon)
The National Union (French: Union Nationale, UN) is a Gabonese political party. Founded in 2009 by Zacharie Myboto, a former close ally of President Omar Bongo, the party positions itself as a major opposition force to the ruling Gabonese Democratic Party (PDG).
The UN was created in the context of increasing discontent with the Bongo regime, particularly following the death of Omar Bongo and the subsequent election of his son, Ali Bongo Ondimba. Myboto, having served in various high-ranking government positions under Omar Bongo, including Minister, became a vocal critic of Ali Bongo and the direction of the country.
The party's platform generally advocates for greater transparency and accountability in government, economic diversification to reduce Gabon's dependence on oil, and improved social services. It has participated in various elections since its founding, often fielding candidates in parliamentary and presidential elections.
While the UN has been a prominent opposition party, it has faced challenges common to opposition groups in Gabon, including limited access to state media and allegations of electoral irregularities. Zacharie Myboto served as the party's main leader until his death. The party continues to be a voice in Gabonese politics, advocating for its vision of a more democratic and prosperous Gabon.
