The main event featured a highly anticipated welterweight title bout between Georges St-Pierre and Matt Serra, a rematch of their UFC 69 fight where Serra unexpectedly defeated St-Pierre to win the title. St-Pierre defeated Serra in the rematch to reclaim the UFC Welterweight Championship.

The co-main event featured a light heavyweight bout between Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. This fight was highly anticipated for years, but was delayed due to scheduling conflicts and contractual issues. Liddell won the fight by unanimous decision.

The event also featured a heavyweight bout between Eddie Sanchez and Mostapha al-Turk, and a lightweight bout between James Irvin and Luiz Cane.

UFC 79 was broadcast live on pay-per-view in the United States and Canada.
