John Hayward (architect)
John Hayward (1807-1891) was a British architect, primarily active in Exeter and Devon during the 19th century. He is noted for his Gothic Revival designs, particularly churches and public buildings, and contributed significantly to the architectural landscape of the region. Hayward was articled to architect John Kendall, and later established his own independent practice. His work often featured local materials, such as Devon limestone and red sandstone. Notable projects include the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter, and numerous church restorations and new builds across Devon. He also designed workhouses, schools and private residences. Hayward's architectural style displays a strong influence from Pugin's principles of Gothic Revivalism.
