Sun-Maid
Sun-Maid Growers of California is a privately owned American cooperative of raisin growers headquartered in Kingsburg, California. It is best known for its brand of raisins and dried fruits.
History
The cooperative was founded in 1912 as the California Associated Raisin Company, with the goal of stabilizing raisin prices and marketing the crops of its member growers. The name was changed to Sun-Maid Raisin Growers of California in 1915. The Sun-Maid Girl, a prominent figure in the brand's logo and marketing, was introduced around the same time, based on a real-life woman named Lorraine Collett Petersen.
Products
Sun-Maid's primary product is raisins, available in various formats including traditional sun-dried raisins, jumbo raisins, and flavored raisins. In addition to raisins, Sun-Maid also produces and markets other dried fruits, such as prunes, apricots, and dates. They also offer raisin-containing snacks and baking ingredients.
Cooperative Structure
As a cooperative, Sun-Maid is owned and operated by its member growers, who share in the profits based on the amount of fruit they supply. This structure aims to provide growers with greater control over the marketing and pricing of their crops, as well as a share in the company's financial success.
Brand Recognition
The Sun-Maid brand is widely recognized globally, and the Sun-Maid Girl is a recognizable and iconic symbol. The brand has maintained a consistent image and marketing strategy for over a century, contributing to its enduring popularity.
