Schmelz (Vienna)
Schmelz is a large, primarily residential area located in the 15th district (Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus) of Vienna, Austria. It's characterized by its mix of late 19th and early 20th-century residential buildings, often in the style of Gründerzeit architecture.
Historically, the area was known as a large military training ground, the "k.k. Schmelz", which occupied a significant portion of the present-day Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus district. The name "Schmelz" derives from "schmelzen" (to melt), referencing a former iron foundry or smelter that was once located in the vicinity.
Following the dismantling of the military grounds after World War I, the area underwent significant redevelopment. The "Siedlung Schmelz," a large-scale social housing project, was constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting the socialist "Red Vienna" era. This project aimed to provide affordable housing for the working class.
Today, Schmelz is a densely populated urban area with a strong community feel. It is well-connected to the city center by public transportation, including the U3 metro line. The area offers a range of amenities, including shops, schools, and parks. It's known for its diverse population and is experiencing ongoing development and revitalization efforts. A prominent feature is the Auer-Welsbach-Park, a large park built on the former grounds of a gasworks, offering recreational space.
