Permanent Damage (The GTOs album)
Permanent Damage is the sole studio album by the all-girl rock group The GTOs (Girls Together Outrageously). It was released in 1969 on Straight Records, a label formed by Frank Zappa and Herb Cohen.
The album is a collection of avant-garde rock, performance art, spoken word, and social commentary, reflecting the band's connections to the Los Angeles art and music scene of the late 1960s. Frank Zappa produced the album and also contributed significantly to its arrangements and songwriting.
Permanent Damage is notable for its experimental and unconventional nature. The songs often feature non-traditional song structures, fragmented lyrics, and a mix of musical styles, including rock, blues, and psychedelic elements. The GTOs' spoken word pieces often satirized the music industry, gender roles, and social expectations of the time.
Despite not achieving mainstream commercial success, Permanent Damage has gained a cult following and is considered a significant and influential album in the history of experimental rock music. It provides a glimpse into the counter-culture scene of Los Angeles in the late 1960s and showcases the artistic sensibilities of the GTOs.
