Alexey Razumovsky (born 1748)
Alexey Kirillovich Razumovsky (Russian: Алексей Кириллович Разумовский; March 22, 1748 – April 6, 1822) was a Russian statesman from the Razumovsky family. He served as a senator, Privy Councillor, and Minister of National Education.
Razumovsky was the son of Kirill Razumovsky, the last Hetman of Ukraine and president of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and Ekaterina Ivanovna Naryshkina. He inherited vast estates and a significant fortune from his father.
He served in various government positions throughout his career, including as a senator under Catherine the Great and Paul I. Under Alexander I, he was appointed Minister of National Education in 1810, a position he held until 1816. As Minister, he played a key role in educational reforms, including the establishment of new universities and the improvement of curriculum. He faced challenges in implementing these reforms due to financial constraints and bureaucratic resistance.
Razumovsky was a patron of the arts and sciences. He was a member of several scientific societies and supported various cultural initiatives. He died in Moscow in 1822. He married Countess Maria Mikhailovna Stroganova, but the marriage remained childless.
