New Lynn (New Zealand electorate)
The New Lynn electorate is a parliamentary constituency in Auckland, New Zealand, returning one Member of Parliament to the New Zealand House of Representatives. It is located in the western suburbs of Auckland, encompassing the area surrounding the New Lynn transport hub.
History and Boundaries
The New Lynn electorate was first established for the 1963 election, largely replacing the former Waitakere electorate. The boundaries have been adjusted several times since its creation, reflecting population shifts within the Auckland region. Generally, the electorate covers suburbs such as New Lynn, Blockhouse Bay, and parts of Avondale, Kelston, and Green Bay. Boundary changes are typically reviewed and implemented by the Representation Commission following each five-yearly census.
Demographics
New Lynn is a diverse electorate, with a mix of residential and light industrial areas. The population is characterised by a range of ethnicities, reflecting Auckland's multicultural composition. It is considered a bellwether electorate, with its voting patterns often mirroring the national trend.
Political Representation
Historically, New Lynn has been a marginal seat, swinging between the Labour and National parties. However, in recent elections, it has become a relatively safe Labour seat.
Current MP
As of October 2023, the current Member of Parliament for New Lynn is Deborah Russell of the Labour Party.
List of MPs
(This section would ideally list previous Members of Parliament, but for a static encyclopedia entry, it would require constant updating. A link to a dynamically updated list on the official Parliament website would be more appropriate.)
Election Results
(Similar to the list of MPs, providing detailed election results here would require constant updating. A link to official election results from the Electoral Commission website would be a more suitable approach for an encyclopedia.)
