Medyny

Medyny (singular: Medyn) is a historical plural demonym referring to the inhabitants of Medynia, a region and historical land in Poland, specifically situated in what is now southeastern Poland. Historically, the term was primarily used to denote the serf-like populace residing in the Medynia lands, particularly those subject to the region's distinct legal and social structures. These structures were characterized by a system of collective responsibility and enforced labor, often tied to salt production and transportation. The "Medyny" were obligated to provide services and goods to the state, particularly relating to the Bochnia and Wieliczka salt mines.

The term "Medyny" often implied a certain social status and set of obligations distinct from other peasant groups. They were often involved in specific tasks tied to the royal saltworks and transportation routes. Over time, the social distinctions associated with being a "Medyn" lessened, and the term became less commonly used as the specific legal and social structures that defined the group were reformed or abolished.
