1st Military Region (Yemen)
The 1st Military Region is one of several military regions into which the Yemeni Armed Forces are divided. It primarily covers the governorates of Hadhramaut and parts of Marib. The headquarters of the 1st Military Region is located in Seiyun, a city within Hadhramaut.
The region's responsibilities include maintaining security within its designated territory, combating terrorism and organized crime, and protecting vital infrastructure such as oil pipelines and roads. It is also responsible for border security in its area of operation.
The 1st Military Region has played a significant role in the Yemeni Civil War. Its control and allegiance have shifted at times, reflecting the complex and fragmented nature of the conflict. Control of Hadhramaut, and therefore the 1st Military Region, is strategically important due to its oil resources and geographical size. Different factions, including those aligned with the internationally recognized government, separatist movements, and other armed groups, have vied for influence in the region.
The composition and strength of the 1st Military Region have varied due to casualties, defections, and the integration of local tribal forces. Its operational capabilities have also been affected by the ongoing conflict and the availability of resources.
