Tahltan

The Tahltan are an Indigenous people of northwestern British Columbia, Canada. They are part of the Athabaskan language family. Historically, they occupied a large territory encompassing the Stikine River watershed, including areas around Telegraph Creek, Dease Lake, and the surrounding mountains.

The Tahltan traditionally lived a semi-nomadic lifestyle, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering for sustenance. Caribou, moose, salmon, and berries were important resources. They were also known for their skill in trapping fur-bearing animals. Kinship and clan affiliation played a crucial role in their social organization.

Historically, the Tahltan were known for their trading networks with neighboring Indigenous groups and later with European traders. The fur trade significantly impacted their economy and social structure.

The Tahltan Nation continues to advocate for their land rights, self-governance, and the preservation of their culture and language. Efforts are underway to revitalize the Tahltan language, which is considered endangered. Their governance is structured through the Tahltan Central Government, which represents the collective interests of the Tahltan people.
