Abyndon

Abyndon, also spelled Abaddon, is a Hebrew term meaning "destruction," "ruin," or "place of destruction." In Jewish and Christian theology, it can refer to a bottomless pit, a place of oblivion, or, less frequently, an angel of death. The term is most notably used in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, where Abyndon is identified with "the angel of the bottomless pit," whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon and in Greek Apollyon (meaning "Destroyer").

In the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), "Abaddon" appears several times, often alongside "Sheol" (the underworld) and "death," indicating a symbolic or literal place of destruction or non-existence. It is used more as a descriptor of a realm than a proper noun referring to a specific entity.

The identification of Abyndon as an angelic being, a specific angel of death or destruction, is primarily derived from its usage in the Book of Revelation (Revelation 9:11). This verse describes a plague of locusts commanded by an angel whose name is Abaddon. While interpretations vary, this depiction solidified Abyndon's association with powerful destructive forces.

Outside of explicitly religious texts, the term Abyndon is sometimes used metaphorically to represent ruin, devastation, or utter destruction.
