Hans Breuer (physicist)

Hans Breuer (1932-2015) was a German theoretical physicist known primarily for his work in mathematical physics, particularly in the areas of quantum chaos and the mathematical foundations of thermodynamics. He is best known for the textbook "Dubbel – Taschenbuch für den Maschinenbau" (Dubbel – Handbook of Mechanical Engineering), a standard reference work for engineers in German-speaking countries, which he edited from the 14th to the 20th editions.

Breuer received his doctorate in theoretical physics from the University of Frankfurt. His early research focused on nuclear physics and scattering theory. Later, he became interested in the application of mathematical methods to problems in physics, including the study of dynamical systems and their relation to thermodynamics. He made significant contributions to the understanding of the onset of chaos in quantum systems and the statistical mechanics of irreversible processes.

Throughout his career, Breuer held various academic positions, including professorships at the University of Frankfurt and the University of Hamburg. He was a dedicated educator and mentored many students who went on to become prominent physicists. Beyond his research and editing work, Breuer was also active in promoting science education and public understanding of physics.
