Dungeon (magazine)
Dungeon was a print magazine published by Paizo Publishing under license from Wizards of the Coast from 1986 to 2007. It primarily featured adventure modules designed for the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game. Dungeon was initially published bi-monthly, then became monthly. Its companion magazine was Dragon, which focused on articles about playing and running D&D, while Dungeon focused on providing ready-to-play adventures.
For much of its run, Dungeon magazine was unique in that it was exclusively adventure content. This contrasted with other role-playing game magazines that often included a mix of articles, reviews, and fiction. Dungeon's focus made it a valuable resource for game masters seeking pre-made adventures for their campaigns.
When Wizards of the Coast decided not to renew Paizo's license, the print publication of Dungeon ceased in 2007 with issue #150. Subsequently, Wizards of the Coast began publishing Dungeon online as part of its online D&D Insider subscription service. The online version continued to publish new adventures, updated for newer editions of Dungeons & Dragons, until the D&D Insider service was discontinued.
Key aspects of Dungeon magazine included:
- Adventure Modules: The core content consisted of complete adventure modules, ready to be played with minimal preparation.
- Various Levels: Adventures catered to a wide range of player character levels.
- Different Settings: Adventures were often set in various D&D campaign settings, including Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, and Eberron.
- Author Variety: Numerous authors contributed to the magazine over its lifespan, resulting in a wide range of adventure styles.
The magazine is remembered for its contribution to Dungeons & Dragons gaming by providing readily available adventures to the community for over two decades.
