Joe Morgan (baseball manager)
Joe Morgan (born November 19, 1930, died May 28, 2024) was an American professional baseball player and manager. Primarily a catcher, Morgan played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Colt .45s/Astros, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Toronto Blue Jays across 13 seasons (1959-1972).
After his playing career, Morgan transitioned into coaching and management. He served as the manager of the Boston Red Sox for one season in 1988. He replaced John McNamara mid-season and guided the team to the American League East division title. The Red Sox, however, were swept by the Oakland Athletics in the American League Championship Series. Morgan was not retained as manager following the season.
While his managerial career was relatively brief, Joe Morgan is remembered for his role in leading the Red Sox to a division championship in a year that began with considerable turmoil. His experience as a veteran player likely aided him in navigating the complexities of a team contending for a playoff spot.
