Jackie Milburn (footballer, born 1921)
John Edward Thompson "Jackie" Milburn (11 May 1921 – 16 October 1988) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward. He is best known for his time with Newcastle United, where he became a legendary figure and one of the club's all-time leading goalscorers.
Milburn began his professional career with Newcastle United in 1943, after signing from Tow Law Town. His speed, powerful shot, and scoring ability quickly made him a crowd favourite. He played a crucial role in Newcastle United's success in the post-war era, helping the club win the FA Cup three times in the 1950s (1951, 1952, and 1955). In the 1951 final against Blackpool, he scored a memorable goal after just 45 seconds.
Milburn also represented England at international level, earning 13 caps and scoring 10 goals. He was part of the England squad for the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
After leaving Newcastle United in 1957, Milburn played for Linfield in Northern Ireland, where he also served as player-manager. He later managed Yiewsley.
Beyond his goalscoring prowess, Milburn was admired for his sportsmanship and dedication to the game. He remained a beloved figure in Newcastle and throughout English football long after his retirement. He died in 1988 and is still revered by Newcastle United fans. His statue stands outside St. James' Park, the home of Newcastle United, as a lasting tribute to his contribution to the club and the sport.
