James Watson (engraver)

James Watson (c. 1740 – 1790) was a British engraver, known particularly for his mezzotints.

Born in Ireland around 1740, Watson moved to London and studied under Samuel Dixon. He specialized in mezzotint engraving, becoming a highly regarded exponent of the technique. He produced portraits after paintings by leading artists of the day, including Sir Joshua Reynolds. His subjects included prominent figures in British society, such as members of the aristocracy, politicians, and actors.

Watson's skill lay in his ability to translate the subtleties of paint into the tonal range achievable through mezzotint. He was meticulous in capturing likenesses and textures, and his prints were widely collected.

He also engraved genre scenes and historical subjects. Watson established a successful printmaking business, sometimes working in collaboration with his brother, Thomas Watson (also an engraver).

James Watson died in 1790. His work continues to be admired for its technical virtuosity and its contribution to the art of portrait engraving during the late 18th century. His prints are held in numerous museum collections.
