USS Chippewa (1815)
The USS Chippewa was a ship-of-the-line in the United States Navy, authorized by Congress in 1813 as one of nine such vessels. Construction began at Sacket's Harbor, New York, in 1814, under the supervision of Master Commandant Melancthon Taylor Woolsey. However, the War of 1812 ended before the Chippewa could be launched or see any active service.
Due to the Treaty of Ghent, which significantly reduced the need for a large naval force on the Great Lakes, the Chippewa was never completed. The ship's timber was preserved under sheds for a number of years. In 1833, the Chippewa was finally broken up and dismantled. Thus, she never entered active naval service. She shares her name with the later USS Chippewa (AT-69), a Navajo-class fleet tug.
