Deftones
Deftones is an American alternative metal band formed in Sacramento, California, in 1988. The band consists of Chino Moreno (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Stephen Carpenter (lead guitar), Sergio Vega (bass guitar), and Abe Cunningham (drums). Originally, Dominic Garcia was the band's bassist, followed by Chi Cheng until Cheng's passing in 2013 after a prolonged coma stemming from a car accident.
Deftones are known for their experimental sound, blending elements of alternative metal, nu metal, dream pop, shoegaze, and trip hop. Their music often features atmospheric soundscapes, distorted guitars, and Chino Moreno's distinctive vocals, which range from melodic singing to aggressive screams.
The band rose to prominence in the mid-1990s with the release of their debut album, Adrenaline (1995), and gained further mainstream success with Around the Fur (1997). Their critically acclaimed third album, White Pony (2000), marked a turning point in their sound, incorporating more experimental and atmospheric elements. Subsequent albums, including Deftones (2003), Saturday Wrist (2006), Diamond Eyes (2010), Koi No Yokan (2012), Gore (2016), and Ohms (2020), have continued to explore different sonic textures and solidify their reputation as one of the most innovative and influential bands in alternative metal.
Deftones have achieved significant commercial success, selling millions of albums worldwide and earning a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 2001 for the song "Elite." They are widely regarded as a pioneering force in the alternative metal scene and have influenced numerous subsequent bands.
