Thompson Peak (Idaho)

Thompson Peak is the highest mountain in the Sawtooth Range and the seventh-highest peak in the state of Idaho. It is located in Custer County, within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. The peak rises prominently above the surrounding landscape, offering commanding views of the central Idaho wilderness.

Geography: Thompson Peak is characterized by its rugged, granitic features, sculpted by glacial activity. Its steep slopes and exposed rock faces make it a challenging climb. It is situated in the heart of the Sawtooth Range, surrounded by numerous alpine lakes and forests.

Elevation: The summit of Thompson Peak has an elevation of 10,751 feet (3,277 meters).

Recreation: Thompson Peak is a popular destination for experienced mountaineers and hikers. Several routes lead to the summit, varying in difficulty. Climbing Thompson Peak requires technical skills and equipment, as well as careful planning and awareness of weather conditions. Backpacking and hiking are also popular activities in the surrounding area, with numerous trails leading to scenic viewpoints and alpine lakes.

History: The peak is named after David Thompson, a British-Canadian fur trader, surveyor, and cartographer who explored and mapped much of western North America in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. While Thompson himself may not have climbed the peak, his explorations helped to open up the region to further exploration and settlement.

Ecology: The vegetation around Thompson Peak consists of high-altitude forests of lodgepole pine and subalpine fir, interspersed with meadows and rocky slopes. Wildlife in the area includes mountain goats, bighorn sheep, elk, deer, and various bird species. The area is also known for its wildflowers, which bloom in the summer months.
