HMS Revenge (1699)

HMS Revenge was a 70-gun third-rate ship of the line of the English Royal Navy, later British Royal Navy. She was launched in 1699, and served in various naval engagements throughout her career.

Revenge was built at Portsmouth Dockyard by Robert Lee. She was constructed according to the 1697 Establishment, which standardized ship dimensions and armament. As a third-rate ship of the line, she was a significant fighting vessel, carrying a substantial number of guns and a large crew.

Her service history included involvement in several notable battles and naval campaigns of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Detailed records of her specific actions are somewhat fragmented but would have included patrolling, convoy escort duties, and participation in fleet actions against enemy naval forces, primarily France and Spain during periods of war.

The ship underwent several refits and repairs throughout her active service to maintain her seaworthiness and fighting capabilities. These maintenance periods were crucial to ensuring the longevity of wooden warships in the harsh maritime environment.

Ultimately, HMS Revenge was lost at sea, wrecked in 1703 during the Great Storm of 1703. This devastating storm caused widespread damage to shipping and coastal infrastructure across Britain and the Netherlands. The Revenge was one of many ships that succumbed to the storm's fury, representing a significant loss of life and naval power.
