City Hospital (Roosevelt Island)
City Hospital (Roosevelt Island), formerly known as Goldwater Memorial Hospital, was a long-term care facility located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. It primarily served patients with chronic illnesses and disabilities requiring long-term medical care and rehabilitation. The hospital's history dates back to the early 20th century, originally established as Metropolitan Hospital's chronic disease facility. Over the years, it underwent several name changes and served various populations.
The hospital provided a range of services including medical care, rehabilitation, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, and social work services. It aimed to improve the quality of life for patients by providing comprehensive and individualized care. The facility was operated by the Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) of New York City.
In recent years, the future of City Hospital became a subject of debate and planning. With the expiration of the lease on the land occupied by the hospital from the State of New York, a decision was made to relocate its services and redevelop the site.
In 2014, the hospital officially closed its doors, and its services were transferred to other facilities within the HHC system and other healthcare providers. The land previously occupied by City Hospital was subsequently redeveloped into Cornell Tech, a technology and engineering campus. The closure marked a significant change for Roosevelt Island, transitioning the area from a primarily healthcare-focused zone to a hub for technology and innovation. The legacy of City Hospital, however, remains an important part of the island's history and the history of long-term care in New York City.
