HMS Somme

HMS Somme was a River-class destroyer of the Royal Navy. Originally ordered by Brazil as the Rio Grande do Norte, she was purchased by the British government prior to completion in 1914, just before the outbreak of World War I.

Part of the E-class, Somme and her sister ships served primarily during World War I, initially with the Harwich Force, patrolling the North Sea. She participated in various anti-submarine and convoy escort duties. River-class destroyers were characterized by their three funnels and were generally considered reliable, if somewhat dated, by the later stages of the war.

Details on her specific wartime service, including U-boat engagements or major battles, are limited in commonly available historical records. After the war, she was disposed of, as were many surplus warships, in the interwar period. Her ultimate fate, such as being scrapped, is consistent with the general decommissioning trends of many older destroyers following the cessation of hostilities.
