Midlands West (European Parliament constituency)
The Midlands West was a European Parliament constituency covering a region in Ireland. It existed from 1999 to 2014.
Boundaries:
The constituency comprised the counties of Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo in Connacht; Clare, Limerick, and Tipperary North Riding in Munster; and Longford and Westmeath in Leinster.
History and Abolition:
It was created in 1999 as part of a re-drawing of Irish constituencies for the European Parliament elections, replacing parts of the Connacht–Ulster and Munster constituencies. Following a review by the Constituency Commission, it was abolished in 2014 and its territory was redistributed between the newly created Midlands–North-West and South constituencies. This change was brought about due to changes in Ireland's representation in the European Parliament.
Representation:
The Midlands West constituency elected three Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) using the single transferable vote.
Notable MEPs:
During its existence, MEPs elected from this constituency included representatives from Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, and the Labour Party.
