Unbelievable (miniseries)
Unbelievable is an eight-part American true crime drama miniseries that premiered on Netflix on September 13, 2019. The series stars Toni Collette, Merritt Wever, and Kaitlyn Dever.
The miniseries is based on the 2015 Pulitzer Prize-winning article "An Unbelievable Story of Rape" by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong, and the 2018 episode "Anatomy of Doubt" from the This American Life radio program. It tells the story of Marie Adler (Dever), a teenager who is raped and subsequently pressured by police to recant her story. Meanwhile, in other states, detectives Karen Duvall (Collette) and Grace Rasmussen (Wever) investigate a series of similar rape cases and begin to connect them.
Unbelievable was praised for its sensitive and nuanced portrayal of the impact of sexual assault on victims, its exploration of police investigation techniques, and the strong performances of its cast. It received numerous accolades, including nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Limited Series and Golden Globe Award for Best Limited Series or Television Film. The miniseries explores themes of trauma, doubt, systemic failures in law enforcement, and the importance of believing survivors of sexual assault. It aims to shed light on the difficulties faced by victims in the criminal justice system and the crucial role empathy and proper investigative procedures play in bringing perpetrators to justice.
