Handball-Bundesliga (women)
The Handball-Bundesliga (women), often shortened to Frauen-Handball-Bundesliga (FHBL) or simply Bundesliga (women), is the highest professional women's handball league in Germany. It is organized by the Handball-Bundesliga Frauen GmbH (HBF).
The league typically features twelve to fourteen teams competing in a round-robin format, where each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. The team with the most points at the end of the season is crowned the German champion. The bottom teams in the league are relegated to the 2. Handball-Bundesliga (women). The league champions and often other top-ranked teams qualify for European handball competitions, such as the EHF Champions League and the EHF European League.
The Handball-Bundesliga (women) is considered one of the strongest women's handball leagues in Europe, attracting talented players from Germany and abroad. Historically, clubs such as HC Leipzig, Buxtehuder SV, Thüringer HC, and SG BBM Bietigheim have been dominant forces in the league. The league contributes significantly to the development of German women's handball and provides a platform for aspiring players to reach the highest levels of the sport. The season typically runs from late summer/early autumn to spring.
