Nannophya

Nannophya is a genus of dragonflies belonging to the family Libellulidae. They are commonly known as pygmyflies due to their exceptionally small size, making them among the smallest dragonflies in the world.

Description:

Nannophya species are characterized by their diminutive size, typically having a body length of around 15-20 millimeters. Their coloration varies depending on the species, but often includes shades of red, orange, yellow, and black. They typically have clear or slightly tinted wings. Key identification features often involve the shape and venation of the wings, as well as subtle differences in body markings.

Distribution and Habitat:

Pygmyflies are found in various parts of Asia and Australia. Their preferred habitats include shallow, vegetated wetlands such as marshes, swamps, and rice paddies. They are often associated with areas that have acidic or nutrient-poor waters.

Behavior:

Nannophya species exhibit typical dragonfly behavior, with adults being predatory and feeding on small insects. Larvae (naiads) are aquatic and also carnivorous, preying on other small aquatic organisms. They are often observed perching on vegetation near the water's edge.

Conservation Status:

The conservation status of different Nannophya species varies. Some species are considered to be relatively common and widespread, while others are more localized and may be threatened by habitat loss and degradation due to human activities such as drainage of wetlands and agricultural expansion.

Species:

The genus Nannophya includes several species, including but not limited to:

  • Nannophya australis
  • Nannophya dalei
  • Nannophya fenshami
  • Nannophya occidentalis
  • Nannophya pygmaea
